Woman discovers resort waitress was adding extra meals to family's dinner bills to feed her kids, husband confronts her and quietly accepts cash repayment, but his wife reports it, causing waitress to be fired: 'I feel terrible'

There are simply no excuses for stealing, but sometimes it is important to hear someone out before taking serious action against them. Most times, it will not excuse what they have done, because for whatever reason, theft has no valid justification…However, this husband is left feeling guilty after seeing the consequences his dishonest waitress faced…

A large family of 19 decided to vacation together at a resort, and every night for the last 5 nights, they would order the same meal, often accumulating to around $800. They were huge fans of their vibrant waitress and always felt that she deserved her $200 nightly tip. However, after the fifth night, one of the women began reading the receipt and noticed something strange…An entree had been added to the bill, so after confronting the waitress, she swiftly apologized and removed it from the bill, no questions asked. However, the still wife felt uneasy about the situation and went off to check the other bills…Yep, the same thing occurred over the last few nights! So when her husband went to confront the waitress in private, she burst into tears, explaining how she had used the meal to feed her kids, despite already receiving a generous tip. He felt bad for her and accepted a cash repayment without involving management, however, his wife did not feel as forgiving…

  • Let's just say, she did not find the waitress's story touched her heart as much as it did her husband's, so she decided to involve management and let them deal with it from there. Who knows how many customers she'd scammed in the past?… Who knows how desperately she needed that extra $20? Either way, there are consequences for dishonesty in the workplace, and we're not so sure her manager will be as understanding.

    (each meal averages 30-70$) each night the bill was 800$ plus 20% grat. (200$) Well the last night, last night I was in the restroom when my wife payed the bill, she noticed there was 20 entrees ordered on the bill, she just notices small things.

    Traditional_City_383 Let's see, she made $1K in tips off of your family alone that week but she still felt the need to steal from you. I'd say she had what was coming to her. Quite honestly I would want the tips refunded. Stealing from customers is NOT good customer service.

    Chefnick500 NTA that is unacceptable on the waitresses part... Neither you or your wife are in any way to blame ... How many other people has she pulled this scam on? Stealing from you and sullying the good name of the restaurant.. Her circumstances may be unfortunate, but that does not excuse her wrongdoing

    BrnEyeslnSF You did nothing wrong. The waitress was essentially stealing from you, and probably would have continued the behavior of she had not been fired. It's very sad, because she must've have been pretty desperate to do that. But the restaurant made the decision to fire her, not you.

    Clares Raccoon NTA Although I wondered for a second if she did it because you were a large group, it is likely that this is not the first time. If any other guests hadn't noticed, I'm surprise by that. I empathize as you do but I also understand your wife's reaction.
